Bucharest County ( Cities: Bucharest )
Bucharest is the capital of Romania. With just over 1.8 million inhabitants and an urban agglomeration of 2.2 million, it is the seventh-largest city in the European Union.
After Bucharest permanently replaced Târgoviște as the country’s capital in 1659, it became the political, economic, and cultural center of Wallachia and later of Romania. The city boasts several universities, various other higher education institutions, as well as numerous theaters, museums, and other cultural venues.
The city’s cosmopolitan high culture and the dominant French influence in its neobaroque architecture earned it the nickname *Little Paris* (or *Paris of the East*). During the tenure of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, extensive historic neighborhoods were demolished to make way for the monumental Stalinist-Baroque style favored by the regime.
