The exclusive, family-run guesthouse Tabaluga is located in the Romanian village of Radeln (Roadeș) in Transylvania, approximately 40 kilometers from Sighișoara, amidst a unique and untouched landscape.
The musician Peter Maffay discovered the picturesque village with its impressive fortified church in 2008 during a trip to his old homeland, Romania. It had been heavily impacted by emigration, unemployment, and poverty.
Address: Radeln (Roadeș, ZIP: 550301), Strada Principala Nr. 91, Brașov County, Romania |
Since then, the Peter Maffay Foundation has been committed to reviving Radeln’s incredible potential. The idyllic landscape, the largely preserved traditional village structures, and the unspoiled nature offer the perfect conditions for this.
The primary goal is to address infrastructural deficiencies in and around Radeln and create an environment where locals and visitors, children and adults of all nationalities, ethnicities, and religions feel comfortable and open to engaging with one another.
Near the historic fortified church, the Peter Maffay Foundation built a therapeutic vacation home for children. Since 2011, this facility has hosted children from both Romania and abroad, offering them stays to recover from trauma. This is just one of four vacation homes owned by the foundation, with others located in Spain (Mallorca) and Germany (Jägersbrunn and Dietlhofen). In Radeln, however, the project extends beyond the children’s home, involving the entire village. The focus is always on the children, with various partners like the Martine & Bertram Pohl Foundation, Volkswagen, Prof. Hans Georg Näder (CEO of Otto Bock HealthCare), and BayWa Foundation contributing to initiatives. These include a medical center, an adventure farm, a carpentry workshop, and a cultural hall.
One of the projects is a guesthouse designed for use by therapists, caretakers of children’s groups, and guests of the foundation. For this purpose, a traditional old building was modernized to serve as the main house, while the adjacent barn was replaced with six modern apartments. Depending on availability, the apartments are also rented to travelers exploring Romania and visitors interested in the foundation. Visit Radeln and be inspired by the unique culture and landscapes of Romania.
