The highlight of the estate is the baroque castle. It is situated on a 12-meter-high terrace above the Olt Valley, at the highest point of Freck (Avrig). The ensemble consists of a main building with three wings, to which two annexes are attached. The U-shaped floor plan, as is typical in Transylvania, faces the park rather than the street.
In 1777, Baron Samuel von Brukenthal was appointed governor of Transylvania, making him the only Saxon in history to hold such an important office, appointed by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. The former summer residence of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal was awakened from its slumber in 2011, renovated according to Brukenthal’s ideas and visions, and reopened to the public. This historical baroque jewel, where history, elegance, and sophistication unite in a romantic dance with nature, is the perfect venue for your events, where dreams come true!
The Brukenthal Palace in Avrig is the dominant building of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal’s summer residence, a mythical and historical place once considered the Eden of Transylvania. It is modeled after Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, as it was designed by the same architect of that era, with the palace being a miniature version, seven times smaller. In summary, these are two world-renowned baroque palaces, artistically and architecturally united.
