Viscri village and fortified church | Brasov County

(21 June 2024)

The village of Viscri (in German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, in Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in Brasov County in Transylvania.

It is located northwest of the town/castle of Rupea (in German: Reps) and southeast of the town of Sighisoara (in German: Schäßburg). Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the village had a population of around 700, mainly Transylvanian Saxons, plus a Romanian village section. Viscri is characterized by its fortified church and its village structure, which is dominated by Saxon farms.

Viscri is/was also made famous by King Charles III, who owns a house/estate here and visits it/the village regularly.

The village was founded by Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1185. The fortified church stands at the northwestern end of the village.

In the 12th century, even before the German settlers arrived, the Szeklers (a Hungarian-speaking ethnic group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here. It was expanded in the 13th century. After the first Turkish invasions, the church was fortified in the 14th century and a defensive ring with towers was erected.

Fortified churches in Transylvania

(26 April 2024)

Transylvania is famous for its more than 160 fortified churches, whose history dates back to the Middle Ages. At that time, the region was a contested border area. The inhabitants responded to the threats by fortifying their churches with defensive structures.

Over the centuries, the structures were expanded and rebuilt. Many of them have been preserved to this day and form a globally unique landscape of fortified churches, characterized by the particular density and diversity of these architectural monuments.
