Sarmale … a magic word and simply DELICIOUS
(13 October 2024)
Sarmale are not prepared according to the same recipe everywhere in Romania. Depending on the region and individual tastes, they vary from place to place, even in size.
Sarmale contain meat wrapped in grape leaves or pickled cabbage with other ingredients. Sarmale can also be meatless (vegetarian) with vegetables. We present a special recipe from Moldova with meat filling.
Add the following to 1 kg of minced meat (pork, beef, chicken, or a mixture):
– 4-5 medium-sized onions
– 100 grams of rice
– Salt and pepper – one teaspoon each
– Dill and parsley – to taste
– Tomato broth (150 grams)
– 4 tablespoons of oil (in combination with chicken meat)
If using lean meat, add a few tablespoons of breadcrumbs or cornmeal to help bind the mixture. Mix the contents well and then wrap them in grape leaves or cabbage, depending on your preference.
Cook for approximately two (2) hours. To do this, place the sarmale close together in a pot and cover with water. If the liquid in which the sarmale are cooking runs low, add hot water to compensate. Check after the first hour of cooking and then as often as you deem necessary.
The recipe matches the pictures. We would like to thank “Mama” Postolache for the recipe and her daughter for the work and the pictures.
The ingredients will make about 120 sarmale. They are usually eaten with smantana (sour cream) and ardei iute (hot peppers). White bread and mamaliga (made from cornmeal, similar to Italian polenta) are also served, depending on the region.
We wish you pofta buna (bon appétit)!

The statue of the Dacian king Decebalus (c. 86 to 106 AD) is 55 meters high and the largest/tallest rock sculpture in Europe.
It is located on a rock formation in the Almaj Mountains on the banks of the Danube, near the village of Dubova (Mehedinți County) in the Iron Gates Nature Park (Parcul Natural Porțile de Fier).
It took 10 years, one million US dollars, and 12 sculptors to create it… and it was not conceived by the Dacian king himself, but commissioned between 1994 and 2004 by a Romanian businessman and historian.

Fortified churches in Transylvania
(8 October 2024)
Transylvania is famous for its more than 160 fortified churches, whose history dates back to the Middle Ages. At that time, the region was a contested border area. The inhabitants responded to the threats by fortifying their churches with defensive structures.
Over the centuries, the structures were expanded and rebuilt. Many of them have been preserved to this day and form a globally unique landscape of fortified churches, characterized by the particular density and diversity of these architectural monuments.

Gura Portitei – Where the Danube meets the Black Sea
(1 August 2024)
Gura (English: the mouth) Portitei is a unique place in Europe where the Black Sea and the Danube Delta meet. It is located on a narrow strip of sand between the Black Sea and the Golovița estuary in the Danube Delta and is part of the municipality of Jurilovca in Tulcea County.
A beautiful aerial video (drone) that not only shows the beauty of the region/Romania, but also makes you want to see more and go on vacation. Originally a fishing village, Gura Portiței (Portița) is now known as one of the most remote (and still relatively quiet) tourist destinations on the Romanian coast. It is usually accessed by boat from Jurilovca. The area is part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.

All guests, including Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder, were delighted with the “hearty Romanian food … with lots of garlic, of course.” In this context, Mr. Cristian Macedonschi presented gifts in the form of jerseys and fan caps from the Romanian Football Association to the guests of honor (including Nuremberg City Councilor Werner Henning, who has been involved in this city partnership for many years) . Romania has once again demonstrated its positive energy and made a favorable impression, as documented in various ways in the media and in the general mood.
